Valley Torah Girls Win 4 out of 6 CIJE Awards
Outstanding innovation and creativity were on display at the 2017 CIJE West Region Girls High School Engineering Conference on May 18th at the Westside JCC in Los Angeles. Students from Meira Academy, Palo Alto, the Torah High School, San Diego, Yeshiva University Girls High School, and Valley Torah Girls High School, Los Angeles, knocked it out of the park with their design engineered devices. These devices solved problems that ranged from waking sleepy drivers to a device that helped blind people learn the alphabet.
The winning Project of the Year was a project from Valley Torah Girls, was developed by Adina Ziv, Meital Shafgi, Aviya Gaviel and titled “CS2 Car Sleeping.” Their project focused on a sensor that detected when drivers were getting sleepy and once activated would wake them up using a device that vibrates. With 20% of road accidents linked to fatigue, this project has the potential to save lives.
Winners from the other categories were:
- Award for Best Social Value, “The Wheel Awake,” by Edan Green and Elinor Shalom, Valley Torah Girls High School
- Award for Outstanding Engineering Achievement, “Follow PET” by Toma Riskin, Tehila Nissim, Ita Rice, Meira Academy

Freshmen Girls in SB
The ninth grade of Valley Torah has completed an amazing year. The girls have grown in their Torah learning and built a foundation of friendship that will continue to flourish throughout their years in high school. We celebrated the completion of our studies with an exciting trip to Santa Barbara. We enjoyed a picnic at the ranch, horseback riding through the scenic hills, achdus activities on the beach, and a sunset picnic and kumsitz in the park. This was a wonderful way to celebrate a successful year in Valley Torah! Mazel Tov to our new Sophies, the Class of 2020!

Our Representative at the RZA Jerusalem 50 Event
Fifty years ago during the historic Six Day War, Israel gained control over Jerusalem in a stunning victory and, for the first time in centuries, Jews and people of all faiths were granted the opportunity to freely live and pray in Jerusalem. Recently, Charlie Rosenberg (VTHS Class of 2018) traveled with his parents to Washington D.C. to celebrate this monumental event at the U.S. Capitol with Senators and Congresspeople.
The event was organized by the Religious Zionists of America and was attended by leaders of 25 different Jewish organizations. A group of about 30 bipartisan pro-Israel Senators and Congresspeople spoke at the event, which took place at the U.S. Capitol. The attending politicians included many of the most influential members of Congress: Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL).
Charlie met with many important politicians. You can read Charlie’s article and see more pictures and the blog he edits.

Valley Torah’s Chessed Committee is off to a quick start. This committee is comprised of individuals who are committed to lend a hand wherever it may be needed. In the past two weeks alone, students have volunteered to help with classroom set up at Yeshiva Ketana of Los Angeles, packed boxes for Hurricane Harvey victims and participated in making shiva minyanim. The committee is completely student driven and is being chaired by junior, Jacob Schochet, and sophomore, Yonah Hami. All students are encouraged to join this committee and have the opportunity to participate in this amazing mitzvah.
